Video link &gt;&gt; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@DCOfficeofZoning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:<\/a><a href=\"mailto:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@DCOfficeofZoning\">\/\/www.youtube.com\/@DCOfficeofZoning<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 18pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8212;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">The January 29th hearing followed on from the <a href=\"https:\/\/savedcpublicland.org\/the1617project\/2024\/01\/24\/zoning-commission-chair-anthony-hood-agrees-with-community-wants-more-public-outreach\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>zoning hearing on January 18, 2024<\/b><\/a>, when <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">the Chair of the Zoning Commission, <b>Anthony Hood, declared he was ready to <i>&#8220;postpone [the hearings] \u2026 until this engagement is tightened up\u201d because \u201cit\u2019s a showstopper \u2026 [and] disturbing [for] folks who look like me.\u201d\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p>See clip here &gt;&gt;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/live\/xr-8mUtfKko?si=DA1RIjtz7P0DR30-&amp;t=7267\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/live\/xr-8mUtfKko?si=DA1RIjtz7P0DR30-&amp;t=7267<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">Hood wants racial equity to mean something, starting with engagement with Black neighbors. <span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">&#8212;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 18pt;\">If the zoning application is approved, Councilmember Nadeau and the Mayor would be able to green light the transfer of 1617 U Street (2-acres of public land) to a yet-to-be-named developer who could then construct and profit from a very dense 10-story + penthouse building &#8220;by-right.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/savedcpublicland.org\/the1617project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/1617u_hakeem_massing.png\" width=\"858\" height=\"571\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 18pt;\">Most of the newly constructed units would likely be unaffordable market-rate studios and one bedroom apartments. The existing life safety services currently housed at the site certainly would be lost at least temporarily, if not permanently.
