{"id":344,"date":"2023-07-10T00:02:00","date_gmt":"2023-07-10T00:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/savedcpublicland.org\/the1617project\/?p=344"},"modified":"2026-04-19T16:51:48","modified_gmt":"2026-04-19T16:51:48","slug":"team-usa-has-the-only-community-survey-seeking-feedback-on-the-game-changing-rezoning-being-compelled-onto-neighbors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/savedcpublicland.org\/the1617project\/2023\/07\/10\/team-usa-has-the-only-community-survey-seeking-feedback-on-the-game-changing-rezoning-being-compelled-onto-neighbors\/","title":{"rendered":"The only community survey seeking feedback on the game-changing rezoning being compelled onto neighbors"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"postie-post\">\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div class=\"gmail_quote\">\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/savedcpublicland.org\/the1617project\/2023\/05\/21\/anc-1c-further-discussion-of-1617-u-street-project-starts-at-10pm-at-night\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">At the Adams Morgan ANC meeting at the end of May<\/a>,<\/strong> the Mayor&#8217;s Office declared it will not go door to door in the area around the 2-acres of public land at 1617 U Street to talk with neighbors directly about their push to dramatically change this community and the neighbors&#8217; daily lives permanently (without compensation mind you).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Nor will the Mayor and Councilmembers pushing the project be directly informing anyone (until it&#8217;s too late) that their project will be <u><i>50%-70% unaffordable housing (aka market housing) on public land<\/i><\/u>.<\/p>\n<p>To do this on public land as the city is saturated with luxury housing for single professionals is criminal especially considering<b>&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/thnvI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DC&#8217;s immense racial wealth disparities<\/a><\/b>,&nbsp; Thus the unaffordable market rate housing being built in any project will be segregated by class and race.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/savedcpublicland.org\/the1617project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/wealthgap_dc1.png\" alt=\"wealthgap_dc1.png\" width=\"530\" height=\"460\"><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Shouldn&#8217;t the city let Cushman &amp; Wakefield deliver for the luxury class of single professionals and we use our public land for public needs like truly affordable housing (such as social housing) instead of the status quo behavior to use our public land and assets to financially back some private developer&#8217;s bottom line.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/savedcpublicland.org\/the1617project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/cushmanwakefield_segregation.jpg\" alt=\"cushmanwakefield_segregation.jpg\" width=\"578\" height=\"462\"><\/p>\n<p>The opaque dealing with our public property allows the public officials to pick and choose the private winners of our public land and then these officials become king makers instead of creative public interest leaders<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/savedcpublicland.org\/the1617project\/2023\/05\/29\/vienna-lessons-from-a-renters-utopia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">like those who exist elsewhere<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>All the while doling out public property, these same officials have deprioritized the future of the police station and fire station both of which remain in serious doubt.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s been no info shared on the future of our first responders other than some vague promises that those services will remain and come back to the redevelopment.
