Childcare subsidies\u2014vital to working families and the city\u2019s workforce\u2014face major cuts. Equity-focused programs are being gutted. Across the board, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dcfpi.org\/all\/a-first-look-at-the-mayors-budget-an-inequality-agenda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>residents face a wave of deep human needs reductions<\/b><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Yet buried in this painful budget is a glaring contradiction: <b>massive corporate welfare<\/b>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fieldofschemes.com\/2025\/05\/08\/22683\/commanders-stadium-could-cost-d-c-taxpayers-13b-including-land-discount-this-is-getting-ridiculous\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">One analysis<\/a> estimates the Commanders stadium deal could cost DC taxpayers <b>over $1.3 billion<\/b>. <a href=\"https:\/\/12ft.io\/https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/3422820\/bowser-unveils-dc-budget-avoid-cuts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Meanwhile<\/a>, Bowser offers tax breaks to ultra-wealthy crypto-tech bros\u2014all while working families are expected to bear the cost of these giveaways.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>SOCIAL HOUSING AT RFK: A SMART, SUSTAINABLE, REVENUE-GENERATING ALTERNATIVE<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">As the DC Council <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dccouncilbudget.com\/schedules\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">launches quickly into budget hearings,<\/a> Councilmembers have the opportunity to intervene and stop the Mayor&#8217;s cuts and realign the city&#8217;s values with its budget. A critical fix: <b>incorporate a social housing component into the RFK Stadium site deal<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Instead of <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/gpropheter.bsky.social\/post\/3lo2psc4jks2w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">handing over acres of public land tax-free to billionaire Commanders owner Josh Harris<\/a>, DC should retain and develop this land into <a><b>mixed-income, municipally-owned housing<\/b>. Known as <b>social housing<\/b><\/a>, this model provides not only <b>deeply affordable homes<\/b> but also <b>long-term, revenue-generating assets<\/b> for the city via rents and home sales.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Social housing is not a theoretical solution as evidenced by <a href=\"https:\/\/thedcline.org\/2023\/12\/29\/council-looks-to-europes-social-housing-as-a-new-solution-to-dcs-affordability-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">some on the Council looking to incorporate successful models from Europe<\/a>. We also have a closer example: Montgomery County\u2019s growing portfolio of municipally-owned developments, <a href=\"https:\/\/savedcpublicland.org\/the1617project\/2025\/05\/08\/tour-of-montgomery-countys-premier-social-housing-project-draws-significant-interest-and-praise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">including <b>The Laureate<\/b> near Shady Grove<\/a>.
